Portrait of Hector He

I founded the Hehe Essay Competition to cultivate rigorous thinking, provocative argumentation, and the bold kind of risk‑taking that begets originality. “Hehe” comes from my name—Hector He—not being derived from humor. This project is serious about standards while welcoming quirk and wit in the process of discovery.

I believe writing is the discipline of translating thought into language. This competition and workshop community exists to help writers build structure, refine voice, and make claims worth defending. We publish exemplary essays quarterly (every four cycles) to emphasize quality over volume.

My aim is to create a space where individual voice can develop through careful feedback, honest critique, and high expectations. If this resonates, I’d love for you to join a cohort or submit your work.

Philosophy

Our rubric balances six dimensions: Clarity & Flow, Depth of Interpretation, Responsiveness to the Prompt, Profound/Interesting Ideas, Risk‑Taking, and Scope. We iterate it publicly to keep expectations transparent and to empower individual voice.
